Which match is our "mata-mata" ?

I believe Portugal's most important game will be their first match with Ivory Coast. A win will be critical to boost confidence, create a forward momentum, and ensure those early three points for qualification to the knock-out stages. I believe Portugal's second most important match will be with North Korea. If we manage to capture six points before even meeting Brazil, then the pressure on our boys will most likely be next to none for what surely will be an exciting, memorable match.

It's easy to say all games are equally important, but the fact of the matter is, Brazil are our strongest opponents in the group, so to ensure maximum points against the other teams I feel is key. What do you deem as being Portugal's most important match in the group phase?

  1. I also believe the first match against the Ivorians is key. We need that last game against Brazil to mean more to them than it does to us. If we can go into that game against Brazil with 6 points and no pressure we can surely come out on top.

All three of our group phase matches will be hard to win. I do not belive there to be a favorite amongst the 4 national sides drawn into group 'G' to advance in the first position. It'll be important to advance in first place out of group 'G' because the runner up will most likely have to face the winner of group 'H' . . . Spain

  2. I agree too, we need to win our first game 100%. Not only win, but win BIG

  3. I love the fact that we have to play the favorites of this tourney which is Brazil, the best african team Ivory Coast (my opinion), 'not so much' about the Koreans but im sure theyre fast n fiesty! Anyways this will make our team more alert comparing to what happened in 2004, 1st game against greece we lost. 2002 world cup, where they thought their group was just a breeze to get by! I hope Portugal starts off strong...

  4. I'm one of those guys who believes and supports the crap you always hear that the most important game is the next game. A win in the first and second matches are crucial. It will then be just as crucial in the third match against Brazil to ensure the most favourable opposition in the first knock out round, i.e. not Spain.

Once you reach the knock out round, the next game IS ALWAYS the most important. In short tournaments like these, that is the mindset that I think there must be, thinking ahead is a luxury that cannot be afforded.

I do not like making predictions or bets on teams I love, so if you want one, here it is: PORTUGAL WINS THE WORLD CUP, because I cannot predict a Portuguese loss, I think it's wrong, even if it is more than likely to happen.

  5. It is super important to come out of our group in first place. Having to play the Brazilians and then Spain would be killer !

  6. to be the best u gotta beat the best, so even though i want portugal to finish first, i'm not scared of spain, and trust me, they're just as wary of us too, we completely man handled them at euro 2004, and we'll do it again, forca portugal!
